A Dermatologist’s Summers

ur summers at the cottage lasted three to four weeks, depending on the year, and one thing I never fully appreciated
Oat the time was how my dad’s career as a dermatologist made those long breaks possible. Back then, his practice didn’t

require hospital on-call shifts or emergency care. It was focused on seeing patients in his office, treating skin diseases. In
Hamilton, there were only three dermatologists, and they had a system where they covered for each other during vacations.

It made me think, perhaps dermatology was the field to go into! No late-night emergencies or hospital rounds—just a
steady practice and time for family summers at the lake. Somehow, later events took me in another direction.
