8. Radio failure
Although it rarely happens, you should know what to do if your radio suddenly
stops working.
In 98% of cases, operating errors are the cause of the problems.
Therefore, remember to:
- check that the radio is turned on and the volume is adjusted
Then check:
- is the correct frequency set?
- is the audio panel set correctly?
- are all connectors securely fastened?
In practice, the suspicion of a failed radio connection will arise if an aircraft does
not receive a response to its messages – or if a busy frequency suddenly becomes
silent.
If it is not possible for an aircraft to establish contact with the aeronautical radio
station in question on the frequency normally used by the station, the aircraft
must:
a. attempt to establish contact on the previously used frequency and, if this
does not give results, on another appropriate frequency or if this is
unsuccessful
b. attempt to establish contact with the aeronautical radio station in
question, other aeronautical radio stations or other aircraft using any
available means, with information that the connection on the originally
assigned frequency could not be established, or if this is also unsuccessful
c. on the normally used frequency, begin the transmission with the phrase
TRANSMITTING BLIND and then transmit the message twice.
