8.1.1.2 Ground station procedures in case of radio failure
If a ground station cannot contact you, it will try other options; for example,
sending on navigation aids that the ground station knows you are using.
The ground station will also transmit blindly to you and, for example, give
instructions that if you hear the message, then SQUAWK Ident or similar.
The ground station can also ask you to make a turn in a certain direction, and if
it sees you doing this, it can give further instructions.
E.g.:
”OY-BKA Billund TWR if you read make a left turn - I say again OY-BKA if
you read make a left turn”
The rules stipulate that an aircraft that has a radio failure and is flying VMC
must attempt to establish contact with the aerodrome by all means
(telephone – data link), and if this is unsuccessful, it must continue VMC and
land at the nearest suitable aerodrome, regardless of whether radio contact
is required.
It must then report landing.
During the approach, it must watch for light signals from the tower.
