Different Behavioral Styles Show Empathy in Different Ways
When we’re attempting to convey empathy, we must remember that our
personal behavioral styles affect the ways we tend to show our interest.
Sometimes those styles will be misunderstood by the people we’re trying
to show empathy with.
For example, a LION may tend to give advice, thinking that is what the
person with the problem needs.
The PORPOISE may tend to use enthusiasm and encouragement to aid
with problems.
The KOALA may lean towards sincere listening and encouragement to aid
with problems.
And the FOX may ask questions for clarification and details.
Each of these are legitimate efforts (according to the behavioral style
involved) to show concern and empathy for another’s problems. And in
most cases, a sincere attitude of concern speaks louder than the words.
But the direct LION could be more effective by listening more and giving
less advice (unless asked).
The talkative PORPOISE could try to listen more and give less superficial
encouragement, especially to KOALAS and FOXES.
The laid-back KOALA could take a more active role.
And the cautious FOX could try to ask fewer questions and be less critical.
