We Must Remember That What We Do Is Not As Important as How We Do It
“Dignity does not consist of possessing honors, but in deserving them.”
--Aristotle
In today’s society, there are individuals with vastly different economic
affluence, from the very poor to the unbelievably rich.
Some people are fortunate enough to have been born into families of
wealth, making the recipients and steward of fortunes amassed by their
parents, grandparents, or even further back. Others achieve personal
success and accumulate wealth through their own efforts. Some people
have average incomes, while still others are in poverty.
Different breaks, opportunities, education, experience—all of these lead to
different career choices and different life-styles.
Unfortunately, in spite of the many aspects of each individual’s life,
heritage, interests, and spirit, our typical first question when meeting
someone new is “And what do you do?”
What difference does it make?
“My first job was as important as any I ever had. It was my initiation into a
man’s world. Being a newsboy taught me the meaning of duty. And
without a sense of duty, a man is nothing.”
---Eddie Rickenbacker, World War I
