The Silver Rules
By following certain rules, we can convey these values in all our
communication. This makes the messages we send much strong than
words alone.
We’ll call them Silver Rules.
Of course, the Golden Rule is infallible, and comes first of all: Do unto
others as you would have others do unto you.
But the Golden Rule doesn’t work in communications.
We don’t want to communicate to others the way WE want to
communicated to…we want to communicate to others in the way THEY
desire to be communicated with!
This is the essence of the Silver Rules of Communication.
The Silver Rules remind us that everyone has different styles, different
agendas, and different ways of doing things. They’re carrying around
different “stuff” than us. As good communicators, we must learn to listen
to their story, celebrate their different behavioral styles, and empathize.
Basically, the Silver Rules help us to do unto others as they would like us
to do unto them, by communicating to others in the way they would like to
be communicated with. Even though it differs from the way in which we
might wish to spoken to.
It is my goal to help people, companies, and families put some kindness
and consideration into their interpersonal communication through the use
of these Silver Rules.
And by adding these ingredients….kindness and consideration, dignity and
respect…we will dramatically improve our personal and business
communication. A culture of kindness is impossible without considerate
communication. And considerate communication is impossible without
following the Silver Rules.
These rules are simple, but they take some work to implement. But it will
be worth it…..all important things take work.
