Before We Begin
“Insist on yourself; never imitate”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
This book will explore the power we all have to convey feelings of dignity,
respect, courtesy, and kindness to the people with whom we communicate.
It is about how we communicate with our attitudes. How we look at others.
How we communicate our regard. Or disregard. Through our eyes, our
bodies, our tone of voice, and our listening as well as the words we speak.
But before we begin, I would submit that these attitudes are difficult, if not
impossible, to convey if we don’t feel them for ourselves.
How can we convey dignity to others if we have no sense dignity for
ourselves and what we do?
How can we convey respect for others if we don’t respect ourselves?
How can we support the dreams and visions of others if we don’t have our
own?
It begins with feeling good about ourselves!
It begins with having feeling of dignity and respect for ourselves inside.
A bored young boy approached his harried father with a common plea,
“Dad, there’s nothing to do.”
As the father read the newspaper, he thought of a simple task that might
keep his son busy. “Here, son, I’ve torn up this map of the world that was
in today’s paper. Why don’t you take some tape and put it together?”
Thinking this would keep his son occupied for awhile, the father returned
to his paper. He was surprised when his son returned quite quickly with
his project completed.
“How did you do this so fast?” the father asked.
“Simple”, the boy replied. “There was a picture of a man on the back of the
picture of the world. I just taped together the picture of the man, and when
I got the man right, I got the world right.”
