Get the Picture….and Succeed

Twice a day, relax briefly by taking three deep breathes and exhaling.
                   Relax your entire body.

Once you’re in a relaxed state of mind, picture yourself as you would be
achieving your goal. Watch every detail. Notice how you walk, talk, carry
                   yourself.

Picture yourself performing in the manner you plant to achieve from every
perspective. See how the world looks from your eyes. See how you fit into
your surroundings. See how others react to you. Refine, enhance, and
perfect your performance as you proceed.

Try to experience all of the senses of your picture. The smell of the gym,
the feeling of your new clothes, the sound of recognition at the annual
meeting, whatever. Experience them as if you were right in the picture.

The more vivid you can visualize the picture, the more the mind will accept
                   it as real.

If you have trouble picturing yourself in a successful endeavor, model the
way you act in your picture after someone who has already achieved your
goal. Notice their every movement….their confidence, their swagger and
pace, their calmness. Then picture yourself in that same manner.

If specific performance is desired, such as public speaking, view yourself
performing the event initially as you would view a movie, as if on a screen
and you’re looking at you from the outside. After the event has been
performed successfully, “move” within your own body and experience the
                   successful performance in your mind.

As you mentally rehearse, you will begin to crystallize the performance in
your mind. You will begin to find that you can recall these peak
performances in your mind time and time again. You will be able to see the
picture of yourself as successfully achieving your goals.

As you do, your body will follow.

I practice this technique before every public speech or presentation I make
and can vouch for its reliability.

Just as your body is following the picture you have in mind right now, it
will adjust to your new picture. You will become that picture.
