Figure 27.20 Imaging of renal infarction. (a) Radiography of an aged domestic shorthair shows irregular margination of the left
kidney. The right kidney is difficult to visualize. (b) An ultrasound image of the left kidney shows that the kidney is normally sized
(4.25 cm) but the cortex is hyperechoic and an indentation (arrow) is present at the lateral margin likely due to infarction. (c)
The right kidney of the same cat also contains an indentation caused by infarction. (d) Ultrasound image of a 6-year-old domestic
shorthair with hematuria and a history of feline idiopathic cystitis. A wedge-shaped area (measured at 0.6 cm using calipers) at
the cranial pole of the right kidney is typical of a chronic renal infarct. (e) Ultrasound image of the left kidney of a 13-year-old
domestic longhair with chronic renal failure. Both kidneys were small and misshapen. The arrows indicate a defect on the cranial
margin caused by infarction. (f,g) Infarcts (small arrows) can take variable shapes as shown in these images of the left kidney of
the cat pictured in Figure 27.18c and d and 27.19a. In some cases, there is indentation of the renal margin. Calculi are seen in
Figure 27.20f and the renal pelvis is dilated. (h) Acute infarcts are hypoechoic rather than hyperechoic as shown in this image of
the kidney of a 17-year-old Manx cat with chronic renal failure and hypertension. The acute infarct shown here measured 0.4 cm
               in diameter.
