Diagnosis
Diagnosis is usually made on the appearance of the lesions. It can be confirmed by biopsy,
but this is best avoided as the procedure may cause the lesion to regrow in a more aggressive
form. For this reason a treatment plan should be in place before a biopsy is taken. Sarcoid
tissue has a characteristic appearance when examined under the microscope.
Management of sarcoids
Care should be taken not to abrade or traumatize sarcoids as this can cause them to ulcerate
and grow. Particular care needs to be taken when selecting a girth for horses with lesions in
this area. Wherever possible, affected horses should be managed to ensure that their exposure
to flies is kept to a minimum.
