Commercial Project: Harley General Store
Built in the early 1900’s, Harley General Store has been a landmark in the Town of Harley, Ontario. This
3,600 square foot building housed a retail component and two residential apartments that required
significant updates to bring it to today’s codes.
The Harley General Store renovation
consisted of full structural
engineering review and redesign of a
3600 square foot multi-use building
in downtown Harley, Ontario. The
existing structure contained retail
space with a small kitchens and
two 2-bedroom apartments located
at the rear and second floor of the
structure. With the original building
being constructed in the early 1900’s,
there were numerous structural
deficiencies that needed addressing,
including a new basement and a
structural overhaul of the existing
additions.
The original building footprint of
the building remained similar to
Harley General Store built in the early
1900’s. The renovation would upgrade
the century-old structure existing
units to a fully renovated multi-use
building.

to their local customers. With a
combined usage and incorporation
of the large commercial kitchen,
various challenges were addressed
in relation to fire safety, including
additional fire separations and
emergency lighting. The two
2-bedroom residential units located
at the rear and second floor of the
building received a revised layout
with new finishes. The layout was
reworked on the main floor closing
off access between the residential
units and the retail space.
With design and planning
commencing in the summer of
2017, renovations and upgrades
were completed by the summer
of 2018 and the newly designed
Harley General Store and Kristi’s
Market Kitchen were opened to
