wo promising Math teachers developed a weekly-updated school Mathe-
matics-based learning project, which primarily aims to develop logical-
T mathematical skills of learners at Ocampo National High School, through
a Weekly Math Challenge. The project called MATHtibay is a Community-of-Project
(COP)-based program, which is purposed to shift learners' attitude positively towards
learning Mathematic subjects.
Its key implementors, Rowel S. Brinas, Grade 7 teacher, and Sweetcel C. Nacario, Grade
9 teacher, developed this enticing innovative program to encourage ONHS Junior High 3KRWRV 6ZHHWFHO & 1DFDULR
students to participate in Math Challenges, posted weekly on the main bulletin board in
the campus and outside the Math Department. Before its implementation, conference
with Mathematics teachers and the Department Head were held, before submitting
the final design of the program for approval. The project is broken down into four
concepts: the Weekly Math Challenge, “Mathtrivia”, "Mathdali” and ”Mathugot."
In the Math Challenge, ONHS students, teachers and other Math enthusiasts
will try to solve a Math problem. Their solutions will be written in a ¼ pad pa-
per with name, grade and section and will be dropped on a sealed box and
will only be opened every Friday (1:00 pm). The names of the three (3)
“Mathletes” will be posted weekly for recognition. Furthermore, the top
ten (10) participating class with correct answers will also be recognized.
The learners with correct entries will be given badges and plus points
in their performance in Mathematics by their teacher. Also, the learner
with the highest no. of correct entries by grade level for the entire
duration of the project will be awarded as “Mathlete of the Year”.
Over-all, the entirety of the program spans all over the academic
year, which entails an excruciating and critical tasks for the two
teachers. Imagine, the tallying of results weekly and the prom-
ised prizes, which most fund were generated from their own
pockets and donations. Despite of this, no amount of money
could pay off the hardwork and pure passion they put into
it. As long as they lessen students, even if little by little,
who fear Mathematics, it means more than their sala-
ries to them.
These two are definitely the ones to be called -
MATHtibay.
