was light, harmless and non-sexual in nature. Maybe they’d had a row before we
arrived, maybe he was obsessive about her, but nothing we did or said was offensive
by any definition.
A potentially fatal attack erupted from nothing and was compounded by the
environment – my friend was hemmed in for most of the confrontation – and
our failure to appreciate the seriousness of the encounter from the outset.
I do not recommend the use of weapons in defending yourself, but this whole
incident was so fast and so potentially deadly that I had no choice. I used what
was to hand and I believe I did not use more than minimum force.
