model. How they
respond to this

pressure is critical to

their survival.

Johnson Press has attempted to solve its problems by

concentrating and acquiring regional newspapers. But JP
failed to come to terms effectively with social media as this

medium increasingly impacted upon circulation figures.

So acquiring an under-resourced, cash-starved Scottish

newspaper and trying to make it stand out from all of the
others, and compete against their editorial budgets, is an

impossible task.

But what many people must wonder is, how do you produce

top-class editorial and expect to attract an audience, either

in print or digital, when the newspaper has got rid of so
many journalists, the very people who can originate

distinctive material?
