Page 6 - Tyrrells Chips
P. 6
“They work best for crisping because
they have less water in them and are as
tough as old boots” Chase said “No one
grows this type any more, so they
would be impossible to source if we
didn’t produce them ourselves.”
Tyrrells grow its own potatoes and
process them into potato chips on its
own potato farm. All seasonings are
completely natural. It controls the whole
process from seed to chip, a processing cycle of 12 months, and from
picked potato to packaged potato chip within a day. The potatoes
Tyrrells chooses to grow are the older, heirloom variety of potatoes for
their renowned flavour, and each bag is stamped with the variety of
potato used, i.e. “Lady Claire." Moreover, the chips are hand-fried and
then packaged in see-through bags (so that you can tell that you are not
buying a bag of air with chips) and cushioned with air for better
transportation. This process ensures that Tyrrells deliver the very
freshest chips to the market.
Chase spent a lot of time tasting different types of potatoes and flavour
combinations, designing the bags where photos of staff and the farm
were often displayed along with a little tale about how the chips were
made.
William designed the packaging for the potato chips himself. He settled
for transparent bags because people are more likely to buy a product
they can see.
