“After two decades of policy responses the sector is not
only more concentrated but also homogeneous,
dominated by financialized organisations focused on
sustaining high rates of return on equity.” (2)
At some point or another, most large companies had built
an Application Programming Interface (API) for their
customers, or for internal use. However, UK banking had
little in the way of APIs for retail or SME customers.
It may be argued that the lack of innovation in UK banking
had led to a lack of finance technology leadership unlike for
example, Germany which was developing a Home Banking
Computer Interface (HBCI) or Financial Transaction Services
(FinTS) sector.
