property. The authors further suggest the need
for re-examining the heritage management
objectives especially the one pertaining to
generating revenues, which should take
cognizance of preservation of heritage assets.
Since the focus of this study is on the heritage
sites, it is also important to understand what is
meant by sustainability in the context of
heritage sites. The tourism related to heritage
sites requires a different way of sustainability.
It is the sustainability of the legacy and
tradition, which needs to be maintained in its
original form such that the current and future
generations are able to relive the ancient or
past eras. When the newer generations attempt
to visit the heritage sites, the expectation of the
facilities is not antiquated on the site. They
require the facilities to be current and the
heritage site management attempts to provide
them in the best possible manner. Therefore,
sustainable tourism poses challenges
altogether while attempting to balance the
dichotomous situation where on one side the
priority is to maintain the ancient artifacts
while providing modern support facilities to
