lives of the region‘s dwellers hit the north
Indian state of Uttarakhand.
Further the state‘s dams and roads connected
pilgrims to various religious destinations. The
natural disaster left more than 100,000
pilgrims stranded (or dead) in the valley, since
all these dams, bridges and roads were broken.
The paramilitary forces as well as Indian
defense personnel were engaged in the rescue
mission.
Media across the nation labeled this as a
―Man-made disaster‖ and it was published that
― The problem with bribing your way through
the next infrastructure project is that nature
does not accept bribes‖ (Live Mint and the
Wall Street Journal, 2013). This was indicative
of the unauthorized building activities in the
region along with excessive tourism (more
than the region‘s carrying capacity). It was
highlighted how hotel managers in the region
consumed all the available water to cater to the
tourists‘ need thereby depleting the much
