funded by the Directorate General for

Enterprise and Industry. This programme led

to the development of indicators to monitor

                                     sustainability (DG Enterprise and Industry,

2013) but recognised that sustainability is a

way in which tourism in Europe can compete

with new and larger tourism destinations.

                                     Cucculelli and Goffi‘s article (2015)

provided evidence to support this thesis that

                                     sustainability aids competitiveness for

                                     European tourism.

The remaining three articles by Byrnes,

Buckley, Howes and McArthur (2015), Coles,

Dinan and Warren (2014) and Pace (2015) in

this SV all shared the focus of attention on

how to encourage small and medium sized

enterprises (SMEs) in tourism to adopt greater

                                    sustainability practices. While SMEs have

                                    many advantages over larger organizations,

the lack of key resources such as capital,

knowledge and time are significant obstacles

for SMEs to overcome if they are to improve

their sustainability and to derive competitive

                                    advantage from their sustainability activities.
