Glossary of Terms*
The following terms are a collection of EAGLE’s
definitions, broken down, as well as from other
industry sources* where appropriate.
Accreditation
Procedure by which an authoritative body gives
formal recognition of the competence of a
certification body to provide certification services,
against an international standard.
Accreditation Body (AB) (also known as Oversight
Body)
An independent agency having jurisdiction to
formally recognize the competence of a
certification body to provide certification services.
Accredited Certification
When a third party has attained formal recognition
from a specialized accreditation body that it is
competent to carry out certification in a specified
business sector.
American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
ANSI oversees the creation, promulgation and use
of thousands of norms and guidelines that directly
