The Professional Development Committee (PDC) has grown in FY22, and this
growth and diversity of membership had a significant impact on achieving the
committee’s goals. One accomplishment included completing evaluating and
implementing pairing of individuals in a Mentor-Mentee program. A subcommittee
has been established to identify and coordinate topics for Small Mentor
Group/Employee Resource Group programs including current implementation of
a small mentor group of young interns on licensing and certification processes.
The PDC is also assisting the Operations Team and Chief People Officer to assist in
creating career paths, growth, and opportunities as well as identifying goals for PM
roundtable to train and foster growth within FGMA. This PM roundtable has
recently been rolled out. An upcoming goal is to coordinate site visits with team
leaders to include other project team members which assist in the professional
growth of our teams. PDC is also tracking internal presentations / site visits for
continuing education credits.
The Resilient Design Committee (RDC) remained focused on three main tenets:
Sustainability, Health and Wellness and Emergency Preparedness/Safety &
Security. There were a lot of initiatives in FY22, and I am attempting to highlight a
few of them here.
Regular meetings of the committee as a whole occurred as did regular meetings of
subgroups centered around the tenets described above. The committee
identified seven categories of objectives for FY 2022: external promotion, internal
training, resilient design, promote sustainability, design for health and wellness,
support diversity, equity and inclusion and social issues and emergency
preparedness. Additionally, several presentations were given by consulting
engineers on Net Zero and Embodied Carbon, and by our team on CPTED
Racism/Social Equity (Ray Lee and Brian Meade). Prairie Trails was showcased as a
Net Zero project.
In October, a sustainability survey was issued to all design staff. Key highlights
from the feedback provided by respondents include:
• Build up staff knowledge.
• Provide building performance analysis workshops including cove.tool.
• Provide guidance on how to talk to clients and consultants about these
topics.
• Integrate sustainable design and resiliency into our process and product,
beyond rating systems.
In November, Lynne Sorkin and Lucy Williams attended the Greenbuild
Conference. The reoccurring theme at the conference was that to meet target
greenhouse gas reductions within the building industry, embodied carbon will
need to be significantly reduced in addition to operational carbon. Lucy Williams
is now working with Mike Denz and Robert Zupancic on a case study assessing
various available tools for measuring embodied carbon. This team is utilizing the
AIA & Carbon Leadership Forum (AIA-CLF) toolkit and publications to guide this
research endeavor. Lucy, Mike, and Robert look forward to providing an education
series on embodied carbon as well as sharing our findings and recommendations,
once the case study is complete.
