Ever-helpful, intelligent, kind-hearted, hard-working, humble; these are the words that
come to mind when I reflect on Appa’s life.

Despite the strict disciplinarian he was during our early years, overtime I got to
experience the jovial side to Appa, and truly considered him a friend. There are so many
things I will miss about Appa, such as waking up in the morning and shouting his name
(just to annoy him), versing him in carrum tournaments (and winning), attending
bhajans & suprabathams together, watching the show Tipping Point whilst we sip away
at a cup of tea, being his personal chauffeur, but most of all, I will miss his caring advice
and level-headed presence. Appa had the most diverse skills in areas like sewing, audio
management, cooking, car maintenance and repairs, gardening, and just being an all-
round handy man, so it goes without saying that Appa was a valued member of our
family and knew the solution to any problem we would encounter.

Appa’s loving memory is not only shared by his immediate family, but also by so many
of his friends. Appa had a habit of wishing everyone he knew on their birthdays and
anniversaries, having curry leaves picked from our backyard and ready for distribution,
and his most admirable quality - jumping at any opportunity to help someone in need
without expecting recognition or praise.

If there is one word to summarise how I feel, it would be nothing but gratitude. Leaving
behind his entire family in Sri Lanka, Appa migrated to Australia to start a better life for
us. Words cannot describe how grateful I am to Appa for sacrificing his whole life to
ensure that our needs were met. For so many years, Appa worked long hours in tough
working conditions to give us the best lives we could dream to have, and spent all his
free time taking Anna and I to classes, rehearsals, concerts, and tuitions. I am also so
grateful to Appa for bringing Swami into my life and taking me to weekly bhajans and
Balvikas classes where we learnt so many valuable life-lessons.

I will forever cherish the memories I have with Appa. I am so grateful to have had a
father who lived his life with the highest of virtues and fulfilled his duties as a father
with dedication and love.

I love you Appa, thank you for everything.
