Page 20 - FOUNDATIONS FOR LIFE: THE ROMAN EMPIRE AND THE KINGDOM OF GOD
P. 20
History Year 3 and Year 4
Julius went to school for seven days then it was market day so the school
closed. He had a summer break.
Julius did his writing in wax using a stylus or stick. The wax could be
smoothed over and used again. Later he may use pen and ink and write on
a scroll.
Rich Romans paid tutors to teach their children.
4. Let four children go with a teaching assistant or parent to experience a
Roman school session (see extra notes). Other children will experience a
Roman school at other convenient times.
5. Let the rest of the class write a sentence to go with each picture using
the slips of paper pinned around the room (see extra sheet).
6. Gather to review the lesson. Talk briefly about Christian schools being
set up to pass on the values and beliefs we have. This helps to establish
the Kingdom as Roman schools helped to establish the Empire.
Learning for Life
The children will have learnt a lot of information about Roman schools but will
hopefully have realised the importance of education in passing on values and
beliefs as well as knowledge.
