Science Y3/Y4 – Forces – week 1
FORCES
Truth to Teach (Source)
God created all that is visible and invisible, including forces. He is powerful to control all of
them. (Genesis 1)
In order to obey God’s mandate to care for the world, we need to understand how forces work
in our everyday lives.
To know the definition of a force, as well as examples of forces.
To learn about Sir Isaac Newton and his work on gravity.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the seven days of Creation in Genesis 1.
2. Establish that God made all that is visible and invisible in the universe.
3. Show, using an object such as a toy car, that objects cannot move on their own without a
push or a pull. Explain that a force is a push or a pull which starts or stops an object
moving.
4. Read the story of Jesus stilling the storm in Luke 8:22-25. Let the children identify the
forces (wind and water). God is powerful over every force.
5. Show pictures, or give illustrations, of electricity, magnetism, friction and gravity.
6. Let the children complete the worksheet showing these forces.
7. Gather the children back to talk about Sir Isaac Newton, either finding out about him on
the internet or acting out the apple falling from the tree on his head. Talk about the
importance of questioning why things happen as Newton did with the apple. (Why does it
fall down and not go up?)
8. Let the children complete the worksheet by writing about Newton.
9. Review the main teaching of the lesson at the end, asking the children to look out for
forces at work in the coming week in their everyday lives.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
God is powerful over all his Creation. Understanding forces will help Man to take advantage of
some forces and to overcome others.
