Science Y3/Y4 – Forces – week 2

                                                        FORCES

        Truth to Teach (Source)

To learn that objects are pulled to the earth’s surface by gravity. This pull is called ‘weight’.

To see if objects of greater weight fall to the ground with a greater force.

To test Galileo’s theory that all objects of roughly the same size fall to the ground at the same
              speed.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review Lesson 1.

              2. Introduce the force of gravity by showing pictures or video clip of a spacemen floating
in space. Discuss why objects fall to the ground on earth but float in space.

              3. Establish how much the children already know about gravity. Explain that objects have
weight because of the force of gravity.

              4. Ask the children if they think that heavier objects hit the ground with a greater force
than lighter ones. Let the children try Experiment 1 on their worksheet.

              5. Gather back to introduce Galileo (born in 1564 in Italy, invented a telescope) and his
theory that all objects of roughly the same size fall to the ground at the same speed.

              6. Let the children try Experiment 2 on their worksheet.

              7. Gather back to draw conclusions.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The force of gravity is vital to keep us on the earth. God, in his wisdom, has created the force
of gravity so that we can remain on the earth to enjoy all that he has created for us. However,
God has also given man the intelligence to overcome gravity through the invention of machines,
              etc.
