Science Y3/Y4 – Forces – week 3

                                                MEASURING WEIGHT

        Truth to Teach (Source)

To reinforce the fact that objects have weight due to the pull of gravity.

The greater the pull of gravity on an object, the more it weighs.

To learn how to measure the weight of objects using a spring balance, interpreting the scale.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review teaching points of previous lessons.

              2. By question and answer, ensure that the children know that objects have weight due to the
                   pull of gravity.

              3. Discuss the use of a spring balance to measure the weight of objects Show other kinds
of scales, e.g. bathroom, kitchen, digital scales used in measuring.

              4. Let the children work in groups to measure a variety of objects, recording their results in
their rough books. (Ensure that objects are of a suitable weight to be recorded on the
                   worksheet graph.)

              5. Give time for the children to complete the worksheet, filling in the weights from their
rough books. More able children may be able to draw a graph of the results.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children should be able to identify weight as a force. They should know how to measure
              weight and record results accurately.
