7 Fractions

Fractions are used in everyday life more often than you think. Key words
One important use of fractions is in music.
                                                                                   Make sure you learn and
Here is an example of a few bars of music.
                                                                                   understand these key words:
                                                 one bar
                                                                                   terminating
                                                                                   recurring
                                                                                   common denominator
                                                                                   improper fraction
A bar lasts a particular length of time, measured in number of mixed number
beats. Different types of musical notes last for different numbers of
beats. This means that the number of notes that can fit into each bar
depends on the type of notes.

Imagine that a bar is like a cake. The Note Name Fraction Number of
number of slices (notes) that it can be beats
cut into depends on how large the slices semibreve whole note (1) 4
are (how many beats each note lasts for). ( )
                                                                     minim half note 1 2
This table to the right shows the names of 2
some of the different types of note. It also ( 4)
                                                                                            1
shows the length of time (number of beats) crotchet quarter note 1
that each note must last. ( 8)

You can see that two minims (half notes) quaver eighth note 1 1
                                                                                                         2
last the same length of time as one
                                                                                             1
semibreve (whole note). semiquaver sixteenth note ( 16) 1
                                                                                                         4
                                                                                           4 beats
The diagram on the right shows how
many of each of the different types 1 semibreve
of note are needed to last four beats.
Two or more quavers or semiquavers can 2 minims
be joined together, as shown here:

                                                           4 crotchets
                          can be written as
                                                           8 quavers
                          can be written as

can be written as 16 semiquavers

In the piece of music on the right,
each bar must contain three beats.

               Try to think of a combination of notes            1 + 1 + 1   1  ++1 + 1
                                                                                1
that would fill the third and fourth bars. = 3 = 3
In this chapter you will learn more about fractions. You will learn how to convert between fractions,
decimals and percentages. You will also learn how to find fractions of quantities and integers as well as
how to add and subtract mixed numbers.
