N: Was it a nice place to work in?

R: There was a smell about the place, and mice too! The machines were very noisy.
We couldn’t hear each other speak above the noise of the machines, but everyone
learnt to lipread!

N: Do you still see some of your friends from those days?

R: I see some of the girls now and again. Then of course, I still see Alan, my
husband! He worked for Mr. Early, you know, driving a lorry.

N: Actually we’ll both be seeing him soon if we sit here much longer. It’s almost
5:00 and he’ll be looking for his evening meal soon. I’d better go back home.
Thanks for such an interesting chat though.

R: How did we get started on all that?

N: I told you I bought a duvet cover, and you went on to tell me why you preferred
blankets. But just tell me before I go. Do you have blankets or a duvet on your bed

these days?

R: A duvet! In the end I bought one, and although it took me a while to get used to

it, I think it’s great now! But, you know, on some very cold winter nights, I put a nice
warm Witney blanket on top of me as well, and both of them keep me as warm as
toast!

N: Bye Rosie, and thanks for the scone too.

R: Bye, and drop in again soon.

6. That was Rosie’s story. There have been changes to do with her work in her life-

time. Did you spot any?

One thing which hasn’t changed is that people need work to do. Work is part of
God’s plan for us.

Early Blanket Mills have closed in Witney now but the story is still true. The
children could be taken to the former factory site to see the new houses built on
the site.
