 To encourage the children to spell and build words carefully to serve the
reader of their writing as well as to enable them to improve their reading.

 To hear, identify, separate and blend phonemes in words.

 To recognise words which have common spelling patterns.

 To instil in the children the discipline of learning spellings for a weekly test.

            Way to Work (Means)

At least one, if not two lessons, should be devoted to phonic work each week as well
as the time allotted for spelling tests. The lists of spelling words for the various
groups should be displayed in a prominent place in the classroom. The words are

given to the children to take home to practise for one week but they are also
reinforced in school through the use of worksheets and/or other activities. The
number of sounds each week and the number of words given to each child will vary
according to their ability. Harder words could be given to extend the more able
            children.

A spelling test is given in a spelling book a week after the spellings were first
introduced. Most children should be able to correct misspelt words and reinforce
them by writing them out again at least once.
