INTRODUCTION TO INSTRUCTIONS: INSTRUCTIONS CAN BE HELPFUL
Truth to Teach (Source)
Heart concepts: Wisdom, Serving
As God is omniscient he is uniquely qualified to instruct us on all matters of life.
Suitably qualified people can serve others by giving instructions on how to do
things relating to their area of expertise.
Learning to give helpful instructions
Way to Work (Means)
Gather together a collection of texts giving simple instructions: a children’s recipe book, a book of
craft ideas specifically for children to use, a science book with activities or experiments for children
to tackle, etc.
1. Suggest various situations/scenarios where the children may need to learn how to do
something needing instructions. Talk about how the children respond: -
Asking a grown-up
Praying - God knows about everything. Talk about how God might answer such a
prayer. (He may speak to you directly. Sometimes God answers by sending a
person to help or by directing your mind to a very useful passage in a book.)
Looking in a book
2. Consider what sort of book we might look in. (A non-fiction book.)
Show that some non-fiction books give you facts and information about things, while some
non-fiction books tell you how to do things or make things. Begin to look at the collection of
books, and at pages giving instructions. Help the children notice that there is usually a
section on ‘what you need’, and then a section on ‘what to do’. The ‘what you do’ section tells
exactly what to do; it gives instructions. Pictures or photographs are helpful too, as they can
show how to do things.
3. Look at one simple text, which could be enlarged for the children to see it clearly.
What can you learn to do by reading this page? How can you tell? (The
title is helpful here.)
Why has someone taken the trouble to write down these instructions?
(To serve other people, who might not know how to do this particular
thing, but who may want to find out.)
Look at each individual instruction in turn. Notice how it is written in short
sentences which tell you what to do.
How do we know which instruction to go to next? (They are numbered or
there are connecting words such as first, next, then, last of all, etc.
There may be arrows instead.)
