Overview of Y2 Summer Term

IDEAS FOR STRUCTURED AND FREE WRITING

            Weeks 1-11

These are ideas which may be helpful but some teachers may prefer to link writing

with other subjects or the term’s project.

            Week 1: Holiday News

This could be written like a newspaper with short headings and reports. Show a
            newspaper to inspire the children.

Week 2: Writing Instructions: How to make a drink and / or How to make toast

Communication and Order: God has served us by communicating in an orderly way
(e.g. The Ten Commandments) and we may serve other people by doing likewise.

Give a clear procedure for the children to follow:-

                      • Title at the top
                      • Sub-heading: What you need:
                      • Labelled pictures of what you need
                      • Sub-heading: What you do:

                      • Numbered instructions – start with a doing word

When thinking about what to say beforehand, carry out literally what children
suggest. This is not only amusing, but also helps to focus their attention on the need

to give clear and sequential instructions.

Week 3: How to build a sandcastle or a Lego house

Communication and Order: God has served us by communicating in an orderly way

(e.g. The Ten Commandments) and we may serve other people by doing likewise.

Bring the sand-tray into the classroom or visit the sandpit. These instructions are
more complicated, and so it is good to go through the actual making of a sandcastle.

The lay-out for writing up the instructions is the same as outlined above.
