            Way to Work (Means)

                 1. Review previous lessons. Use two lessons to cover exclamations.

                 2. Read Job 5:9 ‘God performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be
counted.’ God has made us people who feel strongly at times and exclaim. At times people
exclaim something like, “Wow! Hallelujah! Praise God!” Share these few examples with the
children. Perhaps they can add some of their own too. Write these up on the board, adding
the exclamation mark at the end.

                 3. Sometimes God and other people do more than we ever expected, which causes us to exclaim
in praise, “Thank you!” or “Well done!”

                 4. Talk about times when the unexpected happens and we want to exclaim in anger. Assure the
children that it is alright to feel strongly but it is not alright to offend God or other people.

                 5. Try to give the children an oral pattern to remember, as well as a visual one, for example:-

                                  o Open speech marks
                                  o Write the exclamation
                                  o Exclamation mark
                                  o Close speech marks
                                  o Finish the sentence
                                  o Full stop.

(You may also choose to review this type of sentence: I shouted, “Mummy, you’re so kind!”)

                 6. It might be helpful to have the punctuation marks on cards and also some sentences – a word
on each card. The children holding the words of the sentence decide on their positions first
and then those doing punctuation can find their places.

                 7. Go over the worksheet with the children. Remind the children to use interesting doing words
instead of ‘said’ all the time.

This sheet is best done in stages, i.e. complete the missing words first for all the sentences,
then go back and punctuate them all.
