Overview of Y2 Summer Term
• It is helpful to think of verbs together first, listing these on one side of the board and any
appropriate nouns on the other side. This provides a pool from which children can select
their ideas.
• The children could compose individual lines on a piece of paper first, thinking about how
well particular words go together. ‘Heart-healer’ works very well with the alliteration of
heart and healer.
• Then the children can be encouraged to think about which lines go together. Some lines
will work well as they are two of a kind: -
Light-bringer
Joy-maker
Skin-browner
Nose-peeler
• They could chop up their lines so allowing them to be paired up. A computer would also be
ideal for this. Perhaps they could invent another line to make up a pair if lines do not pair
up easily.
• Next, encourage the children to order the pairs of lines into verses, again
putting like with like, and finishing with an uplifting thought.
• Less able children could be given word endings and be required to complete them. For
example, on the theme of ‘Water’ this could be:-
________washer
________cleaner
________soaker
________wetter
________cooler
________refresher.
• Celebrate the completed poems.
