Overview of Y2 Summer Term
4. Discuss how Mrs Alexander wrote this hymn. Perhaps she first got a little
seed of an idea or maybe a line. She probably prayed asking the Holy Spirit
to help her. He enables us to create excellently. (Exodus 31:3-5)
5. Go through each verse looking particularly at her choice of words.
Chorus: - Identify the sort of describing words has she used
(alliteration in lines one and three; opposites in line two; repetition of ‘all’ at
the beginning of the first three lines for emphasis)
Talk about how she must have kept trying until she found the right words. God
probably helped her with her writing too.
God did not need to make changes to his work because he did his work
excellently the first time. When he had finished, he looked at what he had
made. The Bible says, ‘God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.’
(Genesis 1: 31)
6. Talk about God wanting us to do things well too because we are made like him.
Explain that this does not mean perfection but the best that we can do.
7. Perhaps sing the chorus to/with the children and then sing it again after
every verse.
Verse 1: What do you notice about this verse? (repetition; use of describing
words with ‘colours’ and ‘wings’ adds to the picture she is creating with words)
Verse 2: What do you think a ‘purple-headed mountain’ is? (‘A mountain,
whose top looks purple in the distance’ - that uses lots of words. Mrs.
Alexander has found a shorter way of expressing this thought. She has
created her own word ‘purple-headed’)
Verse 3: What does she contrast in the first two lines? (winter and summer;
‘cold wind’ and ‘pleasant sun’)
Verse 4: This verse is about vegetation or plants. What sort of plants is Mrs.
Alexander thinking about here? (trees – notice ‘tall trees’ - alliteration; grass;
rushes)
