Overview of Y2 Summer Term
Verse 5: Which words are repeated in this verse and in the chorus? (‘great’ –
who or what is being referred to in each? ‘God’ – her last two lines focus on
God; ‘made all things’ – repeated for emphasis, but with the addition of ‘well’,
mirroring Genesis 1: 31, and giving God praise for the excellence of all He has
made.)
7. If time permits, children could be asked to answer a selection of the following
questions, which could be put on the blackboard:-
• What is this hymn all about?
• Write two or three sentences about Cecil Frances Alexander.
• Which is your favourite verse? Why?
• Write out the last two lines of the final verse in your best
handwriting
Quick finishers could get together in pairs and see if they could make up a
verse about things God created beyond the earth – there is no mention of the
moon, stars, planets, etc.
8. Perhaps learn the rest of this song as an activity in music and use chime bars.
Perhaps have the children illustrate it with pastels. Help them appreciate
that, as with any craftsmanship, hard work and improving what you do have a
part to play, as well as gifting and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. In
creative writing, give them opportunity to do an initial draft, which they can
later review and improve on, before writing out their final version.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should understand that excellent work or craftsmanship requires
the coming together of gifting, hard work and the anointing of God.
2. They should appreciate afresh that God is the Master Craftsman, who does
all things exceedingly well. The Holy Spirit enables us to create, hone and
produce works of quality.
3. They will appreciate something more of the way in which words can be
combined creatively, giving pleasure and satisfaction to many people, and
even glory to God.
