LEVERS AND RAMPS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Levers are used to lift loads
The use of double levers
Employing observations and measurements in order to draw conclusions.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lesson.
2. Discuss other ways of lifting loads other than pulleys, etc. Introduce the idea of using a lever if no-one has
mentioned it.
3. Demonstrate various ways of using a lever, eg opening a tin with a screw-driver, using a spade, using a crow-bar,
opening a Coke tin.
4. Explain that the object on which a see-saw is balanced is called the pivot or ‘fulcrum’.
5. Talk about and demonstrate the use of double levers, eg scissors, secateurs, nut-crackers, wire-cutters.
6. Discuss the use of ramps as another way of overcoming forces, especially for disabled people.
7. Divide the class into groups to conduct the experiments.
8. Gather back to share results and draw conclusions.
9. End by thanking God for the many inventors who have made our lives easier by using their God-given gifts to invent
machines to make our lives easier.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children will have recognised the importance of levers to lift heavy loads and will have understood more of how they
actually work. They will also see the importance of using ramps, especially for disabled people.
As a result of studying the topic it is hoped that they appreciate the God-given gifts man has used to invent machines to
overcome certain forces and to enhance our lives.
