Science Y6 – Materials and their Properties - overview
MATERIALS AND THEIR PROPERTIES
Truth to Teach (Source)
Job 28:1-19 ‘There is a mine for silver and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper
is smelted from ore….’
God has created countless resources for us to use. He has given man the skill and creativity to use these resources to make
other materials.
The variety of resources we have at our disposal
To employ simple equipment and materials appropriately
To employ a wide range of methods, including diagrams, tables, charts, ICT and graphs to convey data in a
methodical way
To compare everyday objects on the basis of their properties and to relate these properties to everyday uses
of the material
To recognise the differences between gases, liquids and solids
To appreciate that some chemical changes are irreversible and some are reversible
To describe changes in materials when they are mixed, heated or cooled
To know that boiling, melting, dissolving, evaporating, freezing and condensing are changes that can be
reversed
Mixing materials and separating mixtures of materials
To recognise that most materials, when burned, change irreversibly
Safety procedures to be employed in working with different materials
