MATERIALS WE WEAR
Truth to Teach (Source)
Matthew 6:28-30 ‘And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labour
or spin….. will he (God) not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?’
When we seek God’s Kingdom first he promises to provide us with clothing
The variety of fabrics, both natural and man-made, used in our clothing
Selection of correct materials for certain seasons
Way to Work (Means)
Equipment: Jars, scraps of natural and man-made material, (velvet, plastic, nylon, cotton, wool, polyester, silk,
elasticated material, acrylic, denim, leather, corduroy, suede) tape, string
1. Review the previous lessons.
2. Show the children a display of clothing made of man-made and natural fabrics.
3. Let them create two lists of natural and man-made fabrics by looking at the labels in the clothing and from their
own knowledge or from other resources.
4. Gather back to share. Read the passage above and discuss its meaning for us today.
5. Divide the children into groups to plan fair tests on a bag of scrap materials. The aim is to find materials best
suited for the following: -
a) summer shirt/blouse
b) raincoat
c) sweater
d) swimwear
e) winter skirt or trousers
Suggest a few ideas and give guidelines for carrying out the fair tests but let the children work together in
groups to actually plan them.
6. Gather back to share and suggest ways of recording their results.
7. End by thanking God for the amazing variety of materials we have available to us and for the clothes we have.
Mention briefly about recycling unwanted clothes.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children should be more aware of the variety of materials used in the manufacture of clothes. They should also be
more equipped to select the correct clothing for different seasons.
