DISSOLVING IN WATER
Truth to Teach (Source)
God wants us to submit and give ourselves to the body of God’s people, so releasing our
flavour and becoming one with them. (Hebrews 13:17)
Way to Work (Means)
1. Recap on the previous week’s lesson. Today we are going to see the changes that take
place when other substances are put in water.
2. Fill a glass beaker with cool water. Add one sugar lump. Observe what happens.
Introduce the word ‘dissolved’. The sugar lump gives itself up to the water, and its
flavour is released. Would the water taste sugary?
3. Repeat the process with a piece of pasta. Does it dissolve? Would it dissolve if we
leave it for a while?
4. Organise the children to carry out the following experiment. I found it advisable to
spread this work over two weeks.
You need:
• a tray of substances from which the children can take a
couple or so at a time (see worksheet)
Each group needs:
• a container of clean water, e.g. a saucepan
• a container for dirty water, e.g. an ice-cream carton
• a teaspoon
• a beaker (glass)
• a tray to set the beaker on
Children take it in turns to put a teaspoon of a particular substance into a beaker,
about half-full of water. That child can stir it a bit to see if it dissolves. When the
result has been determined, everyone can record it and then the contents of the
beaker can be tipped into the ice-cream carton and you can start again!
5. Gather and discuss the results. Show how the substance that is dissolving is giving
itself into the water, saying ‘Yes! I will give my flavour to the water. I will share and
make a difference.’ It is like people being willing to play their part in the class family
or the church family, or any other family. They are not being closed and saying, ‘No!’
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
For the children to see how good it is when one gives of oneself and shares with a bigger
family of people. For the children to see that certain substances dissolve in water, while
others do not.
