                                               INTRODUCING MAGNETS

        Truth to Teach (Source)

God has something of His nature to reveal to us through the phenomenon of magnetic power.

Romans 1:20 ‘Since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and
divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made.’

        Way to Work (Means)

*Have the children bring a magnet into school for this lesson.

              1. Who knows what the word invisible means? It means something that cannot be seen!
It is something that exists, something that is real, but something that God has chosen
to hide from our sight. Can anybody think of anything that is real, but invisible? (Air,
gas, water vapour… the Holy Spirit..)
We are going to focus on something that is invisible, but real this term in science! It’s
got to do with magnets, but of course you can see magnets. We’re going to be learning
about the power coming from magnets. We call this magnetic power. This is something
that God has hidden in His world, so that people could discover it, and find out how to
use it, as well as see how it shows us something more about Him as well. Let’s ask the
Holy Spirit to lead us and show us more about God and His world through this topic.
                      Pray.

              2. Ask the children to get their magnet. Look at these together, noting the variety of
shapes, sizes and colours. Note also that each has a part which will pick up some
things or stick on to some things. Introduce the word attract.
_____________ is attracted to a magnet.

                                            The magnet attracts ______________.

              3. Have the children put their magnets down, while they collect six objects from around
the learning centre. Ask them to sort them into those that they think will be attracted
to their magnet, and those not. Then have them test what they have predicted and
                       record the results.

[Some may choose an object such as plastic-handled scissors which does not fit neatly
into one set or the other. Perhaps they could draw them in both sets, indicating with an
arrow which bit was being tested at that time.]

              4. Gather together, and using PE hoops have the children bring some of their objects so
as to make sets of things attracted to a magnet, and things which are not. These
hoops can be overlapping to cope with things needing to be in both sets. This display
could be added to during the week. Leave magnets nearby too.
