                                            THE DEPTHS OF THE EARTH

        Truth to Teach (Source)

God’s power and divine nature are reflected in the creative forces at work in the

Earth, and His knowledge encompasses its heights and its depths.

Romans 1:20 ‘Since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power
and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has
                                been made.’

Psalm 95:4-5 ‘For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are
the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his,
for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.’

          1. Rocks may be classified according to their formation: fiery rocks (igneous), rocks
formed under water (sedimentary rocks), and changed rocks (metamorphic rocks).

          2. God has reflected His love of variety in the rock He has created. Rocks may be
different in hardness, colour, grain and texture. Rocks and stones are often beautiful.

          3. God is at work sustaining and reshaping the Earth through the slow cycle of erosion
                       and earth movement.

          4. Soil is the manageable surface material of most of the land surface of the Earth. It is
most valuable, as it supports life.

          5. Just as rock is the solid matter of this planet, and a firm foundation under our feet, so
God is the sure foundation on which to build our lives. “Let us shout aloud to the Rock
                       of our salvation.” (Psalm 95:1)

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

          Factual content

        1. For the children to know about common types of rock, and to be much more aware of the variety and beauty in
               them.
        2. For the children to be introduced to the slow yet continuous cycle of erosion, and earth movement.
        3. For the children to realise how significant soil is for the continued welfare of people, animals and plants.

        About God

        1. For the children to appreciate how the character of God is reflected in the Earth: His awesome power in the
creative forces of heat, pressure, wind and water: His beauty and peace in an idyllic, pastoral scene on a summer’s
               day.
