STEWARDING ELECTRICITY
Week 2
Truth to Teach (Source)
Just as electricity flows when a circuit is completely connected, so we need to keep connected, in touch with
the Holy Spirit, to experience His help and power in our lives.
Electricity costs money, and so it is wise to switch things off when not needed.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Have two identical-looking batteries, one that has life in it and one that is flat. Connect up a
circuit with each in turn.
Here the bulb lights up. [Now swap batteries.] Why does the bulb not light up now? Consider
their suggestions in turn, eventually arriving at a flat battery.
2. How do you think the battery became flat? [It may be normal use, and since a battery only has
some power in it, it eventually becomes flat. Or it may have been left on by accident, when it
wasn’t needed, and so the battery was drained of power.]
Allow children to share some of their experiences of toys and flat batteries. Do they know that
cars have batteries to help start the car and make the lights, radio and other gadgets work?
Why would it be important to switch off the car lights at night?
3. Are the lights in the learning centre left on all the time?
Having a switch in the circuit stops the power from flowing round it normally, as it should do.
Show examples of switches (e.g. press-for-on switch, slide-for-on switch) and connect them into
the circuit. Even act out a circuit with the children holding hands, and sending a wave effect
around the group! Introduce a switch into this circuit!
Are switches a good idea? Why? Electricity and power cost money.
4. Let’s think about the spiritual picture for a moment.
There are times when the light bulb needs the power to be switched off, like when the light is not
needed and so a switch is a good thing.
Are there times in our lives when we need God’s power in us to be switched off? Are there times
when we can say, “It’s all right. I don’t need God.” What about when we are asleep? Switches
are not a good thing in our lives.
What sort of things might be a bit like switches, stopping the flow of God’s power and love to us?
For us the challenge is to keep on letting God’s power and love flow through us, and not to switch
off. Incidentally, does God ever become flat, like this battery?!
5. Draw a circuit diagram on the board, and ask the children to make their own copy of it.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. For the children to want to keep in touch with their Invisible Helper.
2. For the children to appreciate how they can steward electricity.
