Science Y2 – Parent Guide
6. The rocks in this area (Witney and the Cotswolds) have been formed under water. I can’t
tell you when or how – there is much about the past that we do not know for sure. This
yellowy rock is called limestone, and you can often find fossils in it. Fossils form from the
remains of creatures and plants which fall to the sea-bed or lake-bed and get buried.
Limestone has been used to make dry stone walls and cottages and buildings in this area.
7. Ask the children to complete the middle section of their Solid Rock leaflet. The space is for
them to draw an underwater picture, showing layers of rock with shells and sea creatures
imbedded in it, at the bottom and then a variety of creatures swimming around in the water
above this. (Ask the children not to draw submarines or the Titanic (!) as we are trying to
show how rock can form under water.)
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. For the children to appreciate that new rocks are being formed all the time
according to the wise and clever way, in which God has created the world.
2. For the children to learn about rock formed under water, and to become aware
of fossils in this type of rock.
