INVESTIGATING SOIL
Week 4
Truth to Teach (Source)
1. While rock is the foundational material of the Earth, God has wisely provided soil as
the manageable surface material covering most of the Earth’s crust.
2. Soil is made up of little pieces of many things, and varies from place to place
according to its bed-rock as well as to the balance of its ingredients. God is Lord of
this variety in soil.
Way to Work (Means)
* Have each child bring in a small sample of soil from his/her garden for this lesson.
State clearly that children are not to take soil from a grow-bag or bring in bulb-fibre; it
needs to be straight from the garden.
1. Remind the children that they can see God reflected in the earth He has made.
Sometimes we see a very peaceful side to the earth, as on a lovely summer’s day. This
reminds us of the peace and beauty of God. At other times we glimpse the awesome
power of God, as when we think of what is in the depths of the earth, and think about
hot fiery rock bursting through the earth’s crust at times, or rock being squashed and
completely changed. This is where we experience something of the fear of the Lord.
Recap on the layers of the Earth: core, mantle and crust.
Recap on different types of rock: fiery rock, rock formed under the sea, and changed
rocks.
2. Rock is the solid material of the Earth. As the parable of the wise and foolish builders
reminds us, it is the firm foundation for any building. Who does the Bible say is like a
rock?
Hearing and doing what God says is the wise way to live. That way you will stand, even
when storms come.
Hearing God’s word is not enough,
Hearing and doing prove our love.

3. While rock is the solid matter of the Earth, God has given us a different material as the
top layer of the Earth’s crust. What do we call this material? (soil, mud, earth, dirt)
Today we are going to take a closer look at it and see if we can find out more about what it
really is.
Have each child spread out his/her soil sample on a double layer of newspaper. (Obviously
this is best if it can be done out-side.) Have magnifying glasses and bug boxes to hand for
