ANIMAL GROWTH

        Truth to Teach (Source)

        1 Corinthians 13:11 ‘When I was a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I
became a man, I put childish ways behind me.’

1 Peter 2:2 ‘Like newborn babes, crave pure spiritual milk so that by it you may grow
                                     up in your salvation.’

 To appreciate that we grow and mature at different rates.

 Compare the growth of a variety of creatures.

             Class heights and weights

 To recognise that we grow spiritually, in maturity, character and wisdom.

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Review results of experiments and previous lessons.

            2. If possible, let a mother bring in a baby and share how it has grown, what she gives it to eat,
etc. Compare clothes worn at birth with clothes worn now. Talk about what the baby can do
now which it could not do at birth.

            3. Let the children work in pairs to measure and weigh one another (it is important to be
sensitive to any particularly tall, short, overweight or underweight children). It may be
necessary to work with a fictitious set of class results to draw graphs, etc.

            4. Watch a video/DVD of baby animals noting their growth. Let the children collect information
about different animals from books or the Internet.

            5. Read the verses above to emphasise that we can grow spiritually as well as physically. We
can also grow in maturity, in character, in wisdom, etc.

            6. Gather to review the lesson and to thank God for our growth in so many areas.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

It is hoped that the children will appreciate the various ways in which we can grow but also the wide
variation in the rate and kind of growth amongst different animal groups.
