ANIMAL NUTRITION
Truth to Teach (Source)
Genesis 1:29 ‘Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole
earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” ‘
Psalm 104:10-16
To learn about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.
To appreciate the need for different types of teeth and the importance of caring for them.
To recognise that nutrition is necessary for growth and to supply energy.
To recognise the need for a healthy diet.
To learn about the human digestive system.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lesson.
2. Show pictures of a lion, cow and human being to introduce animal nutrition. Talk about what is
eaten by them. Talk about omnivores, herbivores and carnivores.
• Carnivores need canine teeth to tear food from their prey and molars to chew it.
• Herbivores need incisor to cut plants and molars to chew it.
• Omnivores need both.
3. Discuss why it is necessary for us to eat (energy and growth). Read the above Bible verses to
show God’s provision for living things.
4. Using a video/DVD, the Internet or books describe the human digestive system.
5. Let the children eat a selection of foods using their incisor, molar and canine teeth, e.g. apple,
bread, sweet. Talk through the process of digestion to reinforce learning.
6. Discuss what the children consider to be a healthy diet. Let them fill in the worksheets.
7. Gather to review the lesson. Stress the importance of caring for our teeth.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children should realise the importance of a healthy diet and understand the human digestive
system. They should also be aware of the need to look after their teeth by eating appropriate foods
and regular cleaning.
