6. Gather to review the lesson and briefly talk about excess food being stored in plants for
animals (including humans) to eat. Explain that sometimes it is stored in the root, eg carrots,
parsnips; sometimes in the leaves, eg lettuce, cabbage; sometimes in the stem, eg potatoes.
7. Set up experiments to show carrots (root vegetables) and onions (stem vegetables) growing
again.
Cut off the top of a carrot that still has some green shoots on top and put it in a
saucer of water for several days. It should sprout again.
Each of the ‘shells’ of an onion is a swollen leaf. Rest an onion on top of a jar of water
so that the base just touches the water. Leave until the roots grow down into the water.
8. Let the children record the growth of these plants.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
Everyone should appreciate God’s economic provision through the creation of plants for animals to
feed upon. They should understand the process of photosynthesis and the storage of excess food in
different parts of the plants. They will also be learning how to set up and record results from
practical work.
