PLANT NUTRITION

        Truth to Teach (Source)

Genesis 1:29 ‘Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole
earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.”

 God has designed plants with their own mechanism for making energy and facilitating growth.

 To learn about the process of photosynthesis.

 To show that plants need light to produce food for growth, and the importance of the leaf in
               this process.

 To learn that the root anchors the plant, and that water and nutrients are taken in through the
root, and transported through the stem to other parts of the plant.

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Review the previous lessons.

            2. Have a quiz to see how many kinds of fruits and vegetables the children can write down in
three minutes. Share these lists and acknowledge God as the Creator of them by reading
                 the above verse.

            3. Establish how much the children know about how plants make their food in order to grow.

            4. Explain the process of photosynthesis (photo = light; synthesis = making something). Green
plants make their own food in their leaves by combining carbon dioxide from the air with
energy from sunlight and water drawn up by the roots. This makes a kind of sugar called
glucose. Oxygen is given out as a waste product.

Humans need oxygen for breathing and we give out carbon dioxide that the plants need to
make their food. God in his wisdom has planned all this.

Talk about the function of each part of the plant in the process of photosynthesis.
Talk about chlorophyll in the leaves which is a vital part of the photosynthesis process.

            5. Let the children draw pictures to show photosynthesis.
