PLANT GROWTH

        Truth to Teach (Source)

1 Corinthians 3:7 ‘So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who
                              makes things grow.’

Matthew 13:31-32 Parable of the Mustard Seed

Matthew 13:1-23 Parable of the Sower

 God is the only one who can make living things grow.

 To learn that plant growth is affected by the availability of light and water, and by
               temperature.

 To review ways of writing up experimental work.

 To learn about germination, pollination, fertilisation, seed production and seed dispersal.

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Review the results of the experiments set up last week.

            2. Pass around some mustard seeds then read and discuss the Parables of the Mustard Seed

and the Sower, looking at why the seeds did not grow in the latter parable.

            3. Talk about the conditions of water, light and temperature needed for growth of seeds.

            4. Let the children devise experiments using mustard seeds and/or broad beans to prove the
need of these conditions and let them design tables, etc to record their daily results.

            5. Explain the plant life cycle. (This will also be reinforced in lesson 8)
                                              1. Germination

                  4. Seed Plant 2. Pollination
                     dispersal
                                                  growth

                                           3. Fertilisation and
                                              seed production
