Science Y3/Y4 – Stewardship of God’s Creation – week 1

        Truth to Teach (Source)

To appreciate the wonder of God’s creation and Man’s responsibility to steward it.

To learn the definition of ‘stewardship’ and how it applies to us in our daily lives.

To contrast an area of outstanding beauty with an area which has been industrialised.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Introduce the topic by showing video clips or pictures of countryside and an inner city, or
an industrialised area. Discuss the contrast. Are the changes necessary?

              2. Read Genesis 1:26-31. Let the children work in pairs to list all that God asked Man to do.
Gather back to talk about God’s mandate to Man.

              3. Let the children suggest ways in which they, as children, can care for God’s creation.

              4. Explain the meaning of the word ‘stewardship’. For what are the children responsible and

how should they steward these things? (Their toys, offices, possessions, creation)

              5. Let the children find Proverbs 13:22a to give the reason why we should care for the earth
as well as to honour God. Matthew 25:21 tells of a faithful person who cared for little
                   then was given more.

              6. Let the children draw contrasting pictures of the countryside and industrial chimneys, etc.
They could look up the word ‘stewardship’ in their dictionaries and record the meaning.

              7. They could list God’s commands to Man in Genesis 1.

              8. Some children may like to write a list, or draw pictures of items they are responsible for
and how they care for them.

              9. End by thanking God for his creation and asking for wisdom in stewarding all he has given
                   to us.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children will hopefully realise their responsibility to care for the earth as far as they
are able. They should be encouraged to be responsible for the little they have already.
The children should recognise that God owns everything and we are asked to steward that
                   which is given to us.
